TRBL0003 What do I need?

I don’t know exactly what I need yet but I don’t really need much. Most important is a small computer to convert sensor input to MIDI. Then I need some sensors and a little thinking. I’ll have to find out about breath sensors, breath strength. I need to know about trumpet fingerings and alternatives. Finally I should brush up on my MIDI knowledge.


For the small computer I’ll use my brand new Arduino Diecimila. I created some of the examples and a pre-alpha electronic trumpet and I’m confident the Arduino can do the job. Both ‘valve sensors’ and ‘breath sensor’ already exist in a experimental but working status. Let’s see if I can make the ‘initial release’ somewhat prettier.

TRBL0002 What do I want?

I want a cheap, highly portable and tweakable electronic trumpet. I’ve used an AKAI EVI1000 for a long time but it always needs my AKAI VX600 synthesizer or a special sound module to send signals to other synths or to the computer.

My list of demands;

  • cheap for easy experimenting
  • highly portable
  • open
  • pretty design
  • ergonomic
  • trumpet-like fingering (tweakable for other fingerings)
  • no moving parts (if possible)
  • moving instrument generates controller data for things like pitch bend
  • ‘green’ parts where possible
  • MIDI OUT (for starters)
  • programmable

If all goes well I’ll add;

  • MIDI IN
  • wireless
  • internal sounchip and headphone connection

Yes it can be done!

TRBL0001 Who am I?

I’m a 3d graphics designer, programmer, electronic musician, trumpet player and more. I’m highly interested in ‘synaesthesia‘ from a creators point of view.

With ‘synaesthesia’ I mean ‘a perceptual experience in which a stimulus in one modality is in parallel with an experience in a different sensory modality‘. With my playing I not only want to control sound but graphics as well. This in order to create and experience this form of ‘synaesthesia’. To do so I will create a cheap and open system in the following days, months, years, including my own electronic trumpet.

For years I’ve been experimenting with my AKAI EVI1000 electronic trumpet to get towards a MIDI controlled graphics system. There are a lot of these systems out there but I want something cheap and highly tweakable.

After a few quiet years I realized that all the things I want are feasible today. I’ve decided to build the system now and I start out with a new home made electronic trumpet and then start out with Quartz Composer as my graphics system. I also start out with MIDI but that can change…
