Using wooden blocks and mirrors, Rogier van der Zwaag and Susie Oosting create a nice music video. See the making of first:

TRBL0009 Nice AKAI EWI USB site

Looking for info about the internals of the AKAI EWI USB I found this website:

Great stuff!

TRBL0008 AKAI EWI USB

AKAI created a new EWI. It’s cheap ($300) and it has multiple finger settings so brass players and flute players can join in. As the name sugests, it is USB only. So no need for batteries but there’s no internal synth either. You’ll have to bring your laptop. I guess this thing will be very hackable on the USB end of it. We just have to find out the protocol. I hope a MIDI-, onboard sound-, batterypack- and wireless-hack are not far away.

The AKAI EWI USB comes with a softsynth. You can hear it being played by berniesax56 on YouTube:

TRBL0007 GTD

OK, after more than a year I’m back. I lost myself completely in my GTD project. The time I spent planning and prioritizing had reached almost 95% of my work time. It was time for a special GTD project within my GTD program. After some planning I sneaked in a special task that deleted the GTD program and all its data.

The last thing I heared was: “I’m afraid. I’m afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I’m a… fraid.”

I’m free now.

TRBL0006 Fingerings

The fingerings of a ‘regular’ trumpet require only three fingers to move three valves. With these you are able to play all the notes on the instrument. This is why some people can perform on two (or more) trumpets simultaneously, one hand is enough for one trumpet.

But, because all of the notes played on a trumpet are created with the help of embouchure, three valves are not enough for an electronic trumpet. Luckily this problem is partly solved already by the the use of a fourth valve like it is sometimes used on the Euphonium and other instruments. This fourth valve makes it possible to create 16 (2^4) combinations and that is more than enough to play all notes in the octave. The only small problem that arises is the lack of physical support that is normally provided by the pinky.

TRBL0005 Inspiration

Doing a project, inspiration is always welcome.

Reading my daily news I found this half open tube and I love it. I don’t own an iPhone but this almost makes me buy one. I hope I can be as inventive with my OPEN PIPE project.

TRBL0004 What’s in a name?

OK, let’s give the project a name. I want to keep both hardware and software open so I think it is smart to catch that in the name. My project starts as a trumpet. Although it could morph into a sax like instrument or a didgeridoo, something of trumpet should be in the name.

Let’s try;

  • ‘OPEN BONE’; sounds not healthy
  • ‘OPEN WIND’; :-(
  • ‘OPEN TRUMPET’; leaves no way out for other instruments
  • ‘OPEN HALF CLOSED PIPE’; is acoustical sound but a bit confusing
  • ‘HALF OPEN PIPE’; :-)
  • ‘OPEN PIPE’; means something else
  • ‘OPEN HORN’; sounds too much like Alphorn which I don’t like that much
  • ‘OPEN TUBE’; …

Let choose ‘OPEN TUBE’. It also means something else already but I don’t think it will interfere with this project.

I’ll nee a logo to. Something transparent and open. I’ll have the name in it too, so there’s no confusion about it. Let’s give it some dynamics by tilting it a bit. Let’s see if I can live with that.
